Memories – Belinda Key (nee Drury)

13 October 2026 – Belinda Key (nee Drury)

My Mum died recently and I discovered this card of bias binding whilst sorting through her workbox. It made me smile, check out the price ticket from Buckby’s Shop! There’s a blast from the past.

When we moved to Middleton in 1968 (into new build on Darescroft), there was a Co-Op on Main Street. It was there for a number of years and then became a hairdressers. I’ve looked on Street View and it looks as if the building was knocked down to presumably build Glover Court?

We lived in Middleton for approx 10 years to 1978, and I remember a really nice lady called Barbie Granger worked at the Post Office on Church Street in Cottingham – she lived in a house on Main Street in Middleton. Perhaps Mrs Beadsworth (Irene) could verify this?

By the way, for a while we used to go to Mrs Beadsworth’s house near the Royal George to have our hair cut (as did lots of people). I think Irene’s daughter Sally and my younger brother Ben were in same class at school…Wendy possibly year or 2 below me!

I am also sending you a class photo, taken in 1969 on same day as the other two school pictures you have on the site (Miss Leahy and Mr Kisby’s classes). The teacher in the photo is Mrs Blount. I remember she lived in Corby and biked into work each day. The picture of the PE lesson is my sister (Joanna Drury) and Ted Harrison who’s jumping by the side. I can see Winnifred Mckenzie and Sarah Hannant in the queue behind.

I’ve just read, and really enjoyed, the village shop history page. Well done you, what a thorough and interesting piece of work and well done for your endeavours.

  1. Hi Belinda,

I’ve been told that the hairdressers (Country Cuts) was in a building next to Middleton Orchard, which is at the entrance to Glover Court. It would be good to pinpoint exactly where it was. I didn’t know the building used to be a Co-Op. I will add that to the Shops page too. Thank you for sending us your memories.

    Regards, Jane
